The State of Michigan

Michigan’s automotive industry is primarily located in the southeast corner of the state, and is comprised of 12 assembly plants, 11 engine plants, 14 service parts operations (SPO), 3 transmission plants, and over 800 automotive suppliers. These facilities directly employ roughly 130,000 workers in Michigan, and contributed to $11.8 billion (in 2007) spent in automotive research and development in the state.

Michigan produced over 1.5 million cars and light trucks in 2010. Vehicle manufacturers include domestic automakers General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler, with facilities relying heavily on the U.S. automotive supply base—both within and outside of Michigan. Many of these suppliers do significant business with the Detroit Three companies.
