Project Future - St. Joseph County

Names like Studebaker and Bendix secured for St. Joseph County, Indiana, a place in automotive history.

Today, companies like AM General, Hoosier Tire, Federal Mogul, Nyloncraft, I/N Kote, Haldex Garphyttan Wire, Eaton Corporation, Plastic Solutions, Robert Bosch Braking Systems and many more carry on the established traditions of innovation and ingenuity, while employing thousands.

The center of a 75-mile geographic radius encompassing a million workers, St. Joseph County's own population is projected to be over 270,000 in 2010. Logistically, the county is the eastern terminus of Indiana's only Extra Heavy-Duty Highway, initially designed to allow steel manufacturers located along the southern end of Lake Michigan to ship double coils of steel into the Michigan auto markets (134,000 lbs. GVW rather than the typical 80,000 lbs. GVW), but since extended to accommodate the needs of local steel processors and other expanding industries.
