Greater Kokomo
Greater Kokomo has a robust and rich tradition in the automotive industry. Since the deployment of the first commercially produced automobile by Elwood Haynes, Kokomo has been a leader in automobile and related technology advances. About 8,000 people in Greater Kokomo are employed in the automotive industry directly and through local suppliers.Located in the Midwest Auto Loop, Greater Kokomo boasts important automotive facilities belonging to Delphi Automotive, Chrysler and General Motors.
Greater Kokomo is home to the world headquarters of Delphi Automotive’s Electronics & Safety division. At Delphi’s Kokomo Technical Center, hundreds of engineers and technologists are developing industry-leading technologies, processes and products to meet the global demand for vehicles that are safer and more environmentally responsible and that allow drivers and passengers to be better connected to the information and entertainment expected by today’s consumers. Delphi is investing $89.3 million, matched by $89.3 million from the U.S. Department of Energy, to advance the manufacture of hybrid and electric vehicles in the United States, plus an additional $25 million to construct and equip a new technology and validation center in Kokomo.
Greater Kokomo is also the home of Chrysler LLC’s largest transmission manufacturing center in the world. Four Chrysler facilities are located in Kokomo, employing more than 5,000. In 2010, the company announced a long-term investment commitment to Kokomo of $1.27 billion in local facilities including manufacturing lines for new advanced transmissions.
General Motors Components Holdings operates a manufacturing location in Kokomo, leading in advanced manufacturing of technology components in diverse industries with a focus on automotive.
Greater Kokomo offers a skilled workforce, access to higher education and training and offers its employers favorable operating costs. Greater Kokomo is well situated geographically, with access to 65 percent of the U.S. population within a day’s truck drive. The interstate-grade U.S. 31 Expressway under construction will improve access to north and south destinations.
