The State of Illinois

Illinois’ automotive industry is located primarily in the northeastern portion of the state, and is comprised of three assembly plants, a stamping plant, and nearly 300 automotive suppliers. These facilities directly employ roughly 27,000 workers in Illinois. In 2007, the most recent year for which data is available, over $208 million was spent on automotive research and development in Illinois.

Illinois is a major vehicle manufacturing state, producing over 535,000 cars and light trucks in 2011. Vehicle manufacturers include both domestic and international automakers, with facilities relying heavily on the U.S. automotive supply base—both within and outside of Illinois. Many of these suppliers do significant business with the Detroit Three companies.
