Southwestern Ontario Marketing Alliance
The Southwestern Ontario Marketing Alliance (SOMA) is an economic development partnership between seven communities located in the heartland of southwestern Ontario, Canada. Given its location at the intersection of three important NAFTA super highways (Highways 401, 402 and 403), and the CN and Canadian Pacific rail lines running through it, the SOMA region offers excellent access to 2/3rds of the North American continent.
Southwestern Ontario is one of the world's most successful regions for automotive and transportation equipment parts production. Ontario is the largest jurisdiction for automotive assembly in North America, producing 1 out of every 6 new vehicles in North America. The region's roots in automobile production date back to the advent of the automobile itself. Even today, the SOMA region remains home to assembly plants representing Ford, General Motors, Toyota and Hino Trucks. Products made in the region include Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain, Toyota RAV 4, Lincoln Town Car, Ford Crown Victoria, and Mercury Grand Marquis.
And well-known companies such as Lear, TRW, Firestone, FAG, Cooper Standard, and Timken have also achieved significant success in the SOMA region.
The area is roughly the size of West Virginia and is home to 3 million people. The workforce is well-educated, with over 60 percent of the population having completed secondary school education or higher. There are more than 20 major educational and research institutes within a two-hour drive of Ontario's Heartland.
